Website launch creates a ‘buzz’ for deaf young people

The first website dedicated to all deaf young people is being launched today by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS), after a survey showed that 90 per cent want more opportunities to meet other deaf people*.

www.buzz.org.uk, has been developed by and for deaf young people aged 8 – 18, and provides the biggest online space for deaf young people to come together, meet and share their views.

Nicola, an 18-year old deaf young person, said: “The buzz website really unites deaf teenagers and children across the UK and helps you make friends before NDCS events and stay friends after as well.

“I found out about other deaf teenagers following their dreams in the articles on the website. It shows me that you can follow your dreams and your deafness will not stop you,” said Nicola.

A consultation with almost 1,500 deaf young people revealed that they want access to more information and advice, and 75% want to get involved and help create the information themselves*.

Susan Daniels, Chief Executive of NDCS said: “The Buzz is the first website for deaf young people, and it belongs to them, providing an important space for them to meet and express their views.”

“Deaf young people told us they want information on topics like social activities and we’re now looking for interesting and enthusiastic deaf young people to get involved by sending in their ideas, stories and photos to the Buzz.”

www.buzz.org.uk includes details of exciting events across the UK, stories about other deaf young people, the latest news and reviews, free games and important information and advice on everything from bullying to the environment.  Deaf young people can also use the website to find and contact friends in their local area.
